IVAN LAM WAI HOE
Contemporary visual artist LecturerI am a Malaysian contemporary visual artist and lecturer at UCSI University, Kuala Lumpur, where I am completing a practice-led PhD in Art, Design and Creative Media. Over more than twenty-five years, I have built a body of work that sits at the conceptual edge of Malaysian painting. My work is held by the Singapore Art Museum, acquired in 2025 through the S.E.A. Focus Art Fund alongside the National Art Gallery of Malaysia and the Louis Vuitton Permanent Collection. In 2019 I was one of four artists chosen for Malaysia's inaugural National Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, and in 2013 I became the first Malaysian artist to mount a solo presentation at the inaugural Art Basel Hong Kong. I am represented by Wei-Ling Gallery, Kuala Lumpur and Bienvenu Steinberg & C in New York City, and in 2026 became the first Malaysian selected for the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in Brooklyn. My practice interrogates rule-based systems in painting , the tension between an imposed instruction and the body that executes it. Writing procedural instructions in the lineage of LeWitt, On Kawara, Weiner, and Bochner, I submit myself to them, treating painting as knowledge production rather than illustration.
